How Garage Door Cables Work
Garage door lifting cables are high-tension steel cables — typically 1/8" or 3/32" aircraft-grade wire rope — that connect the bottom corners of your garage door to the spring system. On torsion spring systems, cables wind around drums on either end of the torsion bar as the door moves. On extension spring systems, cables run from the bottom of the door, through pulley wheels at the top of the track, and attach to the springs. In both cases, cables transmit the force of the springs to lift and lower the door smoothly and evenly.
The cables bear an enormous amount of force every time your door operates. A typical residential garage door weighs 150–300 pounds, and the cables must handle the full load during every cycle. Over thousands of cycles, this stress gradually fatigues the cable fibers.
